I think one factor that often goes unmentioned is the depth of the talent pool right now. Just look at college sports (basketball in particular) where upsets are wayyyyy more common come March than in tournaments from the 1980s and 1990s. With so much talent in sports these days, the difference between teams simply isn’t as big as it used to be, thus making a true blowout a far greater challenge.
